ELA 1 means iaw EU 748/2012 Article 1 the following manned European Light Aircraft:
- an aeroplane with a Maximum Take-off Mass (MTOM) of 1200kg or less that is not classified as complex motor-powered aircraft;
- a sailplane or powered sailplane of 1200kg MTOM or less;
- a balloon with a maximum design lifting gas or hot air volume of not more than 3400 m3 for hot air balloons, 1050m3 for gas balloons, 300m3 for tethered gas balloons;
- an airship designed for not more than 4 occupants and a maximum design lifting gas or hot air volume of not more than 3400m3 for hot air airships and 1000m3 for gas airships.

ELA 1 Luftfahrzeug
ELA 1 bedeutet in Übereinstimmung mit EU 748/2012 Artikel 1 die folgenden bemannten europäischen Leichtflugzeuge:
- ein Flugzeug mit einer höchstzulässigen Startmasse (MTOM) von 1200 kg oder weniger, das nicht als komplexes motorgetriebenes Flugzeug klassifiziert ist;
- ein Segelflugzeug oder motorgetriebenes Segelflugzeug mit einer höchstzulässigen Startmasse (MTOM) von 1200 kg oder weniger;
- ein Ballon mit einem maximalen konstruktiven Hubgas- oder Heißluftvolumen von nicht mehr als 3400 m3 für Heissluftballons, 1050 m3 für Gasballons, 300 m3 für festgebundene Gasballons;
- ein Luftschiff, das für nicht mehr als 4 Insassen und ein maximales konstruktives Traggas- oder Heißluftvolumen von nicht mehr als 3400 m3 bei Heißluft-Luftschiffen und 1000 m3 bei Gas-Luftschiffen ausgelegt ist.
