According to GM 21.A.101 significant change shall mean a product level change to the type-certificate to the extent that it changes one or more of the following:
- general configuration,
- principles of construction,
- the assumptions used for the certification criteria
but not to the extent to be considered a substantial change.
Significant changes require compliance to latest requirements. In case of not significant changes (which are in practice the majority) compliance to earlier requirements is acceptable.

Signifikante (wesentliche) Änderung / Nicht signifikante Änderung (eines Produkts)
Gemäss GM 21.A.101 ist eine wesentliche Änderung eine Änderung der Musterzulassung auf Produktebene in dem Umfang, in dem sie eine oder mehrere der folgenden Änderungen bewirkt:
- allgemeine Konfiguration,
- Prinzipien der Konstruktion,
- die für die Zertifizierungskriterien verwendeten Annahmen
aber nicht in dem Umfang, der als wesentliche Änderung anzusehen ist.
Wesentliche Änderungen erfordern die Einhaltung der neuesten Anforderungen. Im Falle von geringfügigen Änderungen (die in der Praxis die Mehrheit darstellen) ist die Einhaltung früherer Anforderungen akzeptabel.
